Govt instructs Tata not to lay off Air India employees

 


Aviation Ministry Secretary Rajiv Bansal said all the existing employees' interests would be taken into consideration. Tata Group employees who have won our bidding should be retained in the company. That means no more than one year of layoffs. He added that the government has made it mandatory for employees who are laid off after one year to get a self-retirement scheme.

NEW DELHI: Tata Group, which won the Air India bidding and acquired the company, has said it will retain its employees for at least a year. The interests of the existing Air India employees are being protected and the government has said that the VRS facility should be given to the employees who are laid off after one year.

Aviation Ministry Secretary Rajiv Bansal said all the existing employees' interests would be taken into consideration. Tata Group employees who have won our bidding should be retained in the company. That means no more than one year of layoffs. He added that the government has made it mandatory for employees who are laid off after one year to get a self-retirement scheme.

Tata Sons, which won Rs 18,000 crore in bidding at the national carrier Air India, is set to rebuild the glory of Air India, which has reached bankruptcy. Gratuity and future fund benefits will be provided to employees according to country law. Bansal said the post-retirement medical benefits will be provided to those who have retired or are retiring.

Air India has a total of 12 thousand 085 employees, including a total of 8 thousand 084 permanent and 4 thousand 001 contract staff. Its subsidiary Air India Express employs 434 thousand people. About 5,000 employees will retire in the next five years. Retired employees will continue to receive medical benefits as per rules. About 55,000 retired staff are affiliated with Air India.
